Franklin Graham Speaks Out on the Devastating Wildfires in California

Prominent evangelist Franklin Graham has expressed his belief that the devastating wildfires in California, which have claimed lives and destroyed countless homes, are not evidence of God’s judgment on Hollywood or its material culture. Graham emphasized the importance of offering spiritual support and hope to those affected by the ongoing tragedy.

At least 11 people have died, and tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate as wildfires ravage affluent neighborhoods, including Pacific Palisades and Malibu. The destruction has reached the homes of numerous celebrities, such as Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and John Goodman.

As the president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse, Graham oversees efforts to provide aid in disaster-stricken areas. Crisis-trained chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team have been deployed to the Los Angeles area to offer emotional, spiritual, and practical support to those in need.

“People have lost everything,” Graham said. “A lot of people are asking, ‘Why?’ and that’s a hard question to answer. We want to reassure them of God’s love – that He cares for them and hasn’t turned His back on them.”

Graham addressed misconceptions about natural disasters, noting that advancements in technology make these events more visible than ever before. “Because we have TV, social media, and smartphones, we see much more today than we did 20 or 40 years ago. Whether these fires are worse now than 100 years ago, I don’t know, but we’re certainly more aware of them,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Graham warned that disasters like these are likely to continue. He urged Christians to focus on sharing God’s love and the message of salvation, rather than attributing such events to divine punishment. “I don’t believe for a second that these fires are God’s judgment. Could God be judging Hollywood? I don’t know, but I don’t think so,” he said.

He went on to pose a more personal question: “The real issue is, do we know the Lord Jesus Christ? Are we prepared to stand before Him? If our house burned down and we perished, would we be ready to enter His presence?” Graham emphasized the importance of confessing sins, seeking forgiveness, and placing faith in Jesus Christ as the path to salvation.

Meanwhile, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team and Samaritan’s Purse are actively working to meet the physical and spiritual needs of those impacted by the wildfires. Josh Holland, international director of the Rapid Response Team, described the devastation in California as reminiscent of scenes from a Hollywood movie, underscoring the severity of the situation.

“The images coming out of California show the real-life horror that people in the Los Angeles area are experiencing today,” Holland said. “The devastation is immense, and the fires continue to burn. Our chaplains are ministering at local shelters, providing prayer and encouragement to those who have lost everything.”

The coordinated response highlights the commitment of faith-based organizations to bring hope and healing in times of crisis, demonstrating compassion and unity amidst the ashes of despair.
