Scripture:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Standing up for what is right isn’t always easy. It’s uncomfortable, lonely and sometimes it can cost your life.
That’s exactly why God told Joshua multiple times to be strong and courageous.
You see, Joshua was stepping into some big shoes after Moses died. He was tasked with leading an entire nation into unfamiliar territory, surrounded by uncertainty and real danger. And yet, God didn’t give him a battle plan first. He gave him a promise: “I will be with you wherever you go.”
Real courage is not being fearless, but trusting God more than your fears.
Think about the courageous leaders throughout history who stood up for what was right, even when it cost them everything.
These weren’t superhumans. They were ordinary people with extraordinary faith.
Martin Luther King Jr. spoke truth with love and faced jail and threats for it.
Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for standing against injustice.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed for resisting evil during the Holocaust.
William Wilberforce fought to end the slave trade, despite powerful opposition.
And let’s not forget John the Baptist, who was the forerunner to Jesus and He was beheaded. Or the greatest example of all—Jesus, who stood for truth, love, and justice, and gave His life to save us. Now that’s courage.
What About You?
God may not be asking you to lead a nation or face prison, but He might be asking you to:
- Speak up when someone’s being mistreated.
- Say no to peer pressure.
- Do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
- Live boldly as a Christian in a culture that pushes back.
You don’t need all the answers. You just need to know you’re not alone. God goes before you, walks beside you, and gives you the strength to stand.
🙏 Prayer
Lord, help me to be bold and courageous. When I feel afraid or unsure, remind me that You are with me. Give me boldness to stand for truth and live for You, no matter what. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
