God calls us to be wise stewards of everything He has entrusted us. It’s His desire that we manage His blessings with accountability and care. It’s crucial to remember that everything belongs to God; we are merely the managers of His resources.
If you find yourself overwhelmed by debt and unsure of how to move forward, know that you’re not alone. I’d like to offer some steps to help you break free from debt and start your journey toward financial freedom.
Debt can feel like a heavy burden, trapping you in situations you would otherwise avoid. It can also seriously impact your health, relationships, and family life.
Let me share a biblical story with you from 2 Kings 4:1-7:
One day, the widow of a prophet approached Elisha with a desperate plea: “My husband, who served you, has died, and you know how faithfully he feared the Lord. But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.”Elisha responded, “How can I help you? What do you have in your house?”
“Nothing at all, except a small flask of olive oil,” she answered. Elisha instructed her, “Borrow as many empty jars as you can from your friends and neighbors. Then go inside with your sons and shut the door. Pour the olive oil into the jars, setting each one aside when it’s full.”
She followed his instructions. Her sons kept bringing jars to her, and she filled them all. Soon every container was full.“Bring me another jar,” she said to her son.“There aren’t any more!” he replied. And then the oil stopped flowing.
She reported back to Elisha, who told her, “Now sell the olive oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left over.”
This story reminds us that debt can come through various circumstances, often beyond our control, and bring hardship. But look at what the widow did:
- She sought help from someone she trusted rather than allowing the creditors to take her sons.
- She acknowledged what she had—a flask of oil—and was willing to use it, no matter how small, trusting the guidance she received.
- She acted in faith by borrowing empty jars from friends and neighbors, believing something miraculous could happen.
- Her sons supported her, showing that overcoming financial struggles can be a family effort.
- She continued to seek guidance from Elisha, even after filling the jars and followed his instructions to the end.
This story underscores the importance of seeking wise counsel and following instructions when you want to overcome debt.
