“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” Zechariah 4:10
The verse comes from the Old Testament book of Zechariah. This scripture was written during a pivotal time in Israel’s history, a period of rebuilding and restoration following the Babylonian exile.
Historical Context
Around 538 BCE, King Cyrus of Persia allowed the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem after decades of captivity in Babylon. Upon their return, the Israelites faced the monumental task of rebuilding their homeland, including the temple of God, which had been destroyed by the Babylonians. This effort was led by Zerubbabel, a descendant of King David and governor of Judah.
The rebuilding process, however, was fraught with challenges. The people encountered resistance from neighboring enemies, internal discouragement, and a lack of resources. The temple project stalled for nearly two decades, leading to frustration and doubt about whether the task could be completed.
“Do Not Despise Small Beginnings”
Zechariah 4:10 addresses a specific challenge: the people’s tendency to view the initial stages of rebuilding as insignificant. The foundation of the temple had been laid, but the structure was modest compared to Solomon’s grand temple. Many older Israelites, who remembered the former temple, wept in disappointment (Ezra 3:12-13).
This verse serves as a reminder that God values faithfulness in small steps. The “plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand” signifies the measurement and planning necessary to complete the construction. Though the work appeared humble, God delighted in its beginning, knowing that He would bring it to completion.
Application
Zechariah 4:10 speaks to the principle that no act of faithfulness or obedience is too small in God’s eyes. It encourages believers to trust that God is present in the process, even when progress seems slow or unimpressive. The verse reassures us that God takes joy in the steps we take to fulfill His purposes, no matter how insignificant they may seem at the time.
For the Israelites, this promise fueled their hope and perseverance. For us, it serves as a powerful reminder to honor the “small beginnings” in our own lives, trusting that God sees and rejoices in the faithful work we do for Him.
